Have you heard of slugging for radiant skin? It’s a beauty trend that’s taking the skincare world by storm, especially during the dry winter months. But what exactly is slugging, and how can it benefit your skin?

Let’s start with the basics. Slugging involves sealing in moisture overnight with a heavy moisturizer and a petrolatum-based ointment. The result? Skin that’s hydrated, glowing, and oh-so-soft.
So, why is slugging so amazing? Well, it’s all about locking in moisture and promoting healing for dry, peeling skin. By creating a barrier with the petrolatum ointment, you can prevent up to 99% water loss, leaving your skin feeling replenished and rejuvenated.
Now, before you imagine slathering your face with actual slugs, let me assure you, that’s not the case!
Slugging is a term from Korean skincare, aptly named because your face ends up looking a bit slimy, akin to a slug, during the treatment.
But let me tell you, slugging is fantastic, and today, I’ll walk you through how I do it and why.
But before we begin, I always recommend consulting your dermatologist to ensure slugging is suitable for your skin type. Individuals with acne-prone skin might want to skip slugging.
Now, let’s get slimy…
First, gather these products: A heavy moisturizer and A petrolatum-based ointment
For my moisturizer, I prefer Sonia Roselli Intense Barrier Cream, while I opt for CeraVe Healing Ointment for the petrolatum-based ointment.
Pro tip: It’s wise to use an old pillowcase you don’t mind getting a bit messy. And to keep your hair grease-free, you can tie it back or use a shower cap.
Now, onto the process:
-Start with a clean face, ensuring all makeup is thoroughly removed. This step is crucial to prevent locking in dirt and debris that could lead to breakouts.
-With a damp face and hands, apply your heavy moisturizer generously all over your skin.
-Here comes the fun part! Apply a thin layer of the petrolatum ointment over the moisturizer. This acts as a protective barrier, preventing up to 99% of water loss.
-Get your beauty sleep and wake up to glowing, deeply moisturized skin.
In case you are concerned that the petrolatum-based ointment will cause breakouts, don’t be. Petrolatum is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic, meaning it’s unlikely to cause whiteheads or blackheads, making it safe for most skin types and ages.
