For couples drawn to timeless elegance and old-world charm, the region’s historic estates are hard to beat. Several of my favorites fall into this category, each with its own distinct personality.

Birkby House — Leesburg, VA

Nestled in Leesburg, Birkby House is a beautifully preserved 19th-century mansion that balances historic character with modern amenities. The classic architecture and lush gardens create a genuinely romantic atmosphere, and the intimate scale makes it especially well-suited for smaller, more personal celebrations. As an added bonus, the staff are attentive and detail-oriented, which always makes for a smooth and stress-free wedding day.

Rust Manor House — Leesburg, VA

Also in Leesburg, Rust Manor House offers a beautiful blend of history and natural beauty. The picturesque gardens provide a stunning backdrop for outdoor ceremonies, while the historic manor adds classic elegance to the reception spaces inside. What I appreciate most, however, is the flexibility — both indoor and outdoor options are available, which makes it a strong choice across different seasons and styles.

Goodstone Inn and Restaurant — Middleburg, VA

Goodstone is one of the most breathtaking properties I’ve ever worked at. Set on 265 rolling acres in Middleburg’s horse and wine country, it features 18 elegantly decorated guest rooms, a working farm, walled gardens, and exceptional farm-to-table dining. The ceremony spaces are extraordinary. The iconic ivy wall, the glass-walled Conservatory, and the sweeping lawn each offer something completely different in feel and scale. Additionally, from a makeup artist’s perspective, the natural light and unhurried pace of a Goodstone wedding make for a genuinely luxurious getting-ready experience. This is a venue where every detail feels considered.

Wineries and Farm Venues

For couples who want something more relaxed and textural, the region’s farm and winery venues offer warmth and authenticity that’s hard to replicate.

Morais Vineyards and Winery — Bealeton, VA

Morais is unlike anything else in the DMV. This Portuguese-inspired estate in Bealeton features lush vineyards, a picturesque pond, and a grand ballroom. Together, these elements create a romantic and sophisticated atmosphere that feels distinctly European. In fact, couples frequently say it doesn’t feel like Virginia at all. The getting-ready suite is particularly notable. It features a wrought-iron staircase entrance, multiple vanity stations, LED mirrors, and an abundance of natural light. As a makeup artist, a well-lit, thoughtfully designed bridal suite makes an enormous difference — and Morais delivers beautifully on that front.

Hope Flower Farm and Winery — Waterford, VA

Hope Flower Farm is one of my absolute favorites among Northern Virginia DMV wedding venues. The combination of a working flower farm and winery creates an atmosphere that’s romantic, relaxed, and completely distinctive. Beyond the scenery, the blooming gardens and farmhouse aesthetic make for stunning photos in every season, and there’s an authenticity to this setting that couples who love nature connect with immediately.

The Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens — Vienna, VA

Meadowlark is simply gorgeous. The diverse plant life, seasonal blooms, and thoughtfully designed garden spaces create a serene and romantic setting that works beautifully across a wide range of wedding styles. Because the grounds are so naturally varied, you can tailor the ceremony location to your exact vision. Additionally, the natural color palette photographs exceptionally well in every season.

Wolf Trap — Vienna, VA

Wolf Trap brings a distinctive combination of natural beauty and cultural sophistication that you won’t find at most DMV wedding venues. The expansive grounds offer a picturesque backdrop for outdoor ceremonies, and the venue’s artistic identity adds an elegance that feels effortless rather than formal. It’s therefore a particularly memorable choice for couples who appreciate the arts and want their venue to reflect that.

A Charming Town Setting

The Red Fox Inn and Tavern — Middleburg, VA

Set in the heart of historic Middleburg, the Red Fox Inn and Tavern is one of the most charming settings I’ve worked in. The vintage atmosphere, beautifully landscaped gardens, and warm hospitality create an experience that feels genuinely special. The culinary program is exceptional, drawing on traditional Southern cuisine with locally sourced ingredients. Moreover, the attentive staff ensure every detail is managed with care. It’s the kind of venue where guests arrive as strangers and leave feeling like they’ve spent a weekend abroad.

For couples who want the gravitas and grandeur of Washington DC itself as their backdrop, these two venues are among the most extraordinary in the entire region.

Decatur House — Washington, DC

Decatur House was completed in 1819. It sits just one block from the White House on Lafayette Square. As a result, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious private event venues in the city. Intimate weddings can be hosted in the restored Historic Entertaining Parlors, appointed with inlaid floors, hand-painted ceilings, and 19th-century chandeliers. Additionally, a stunning tented courtyard accommodates larger celebrations. The Washingtonian has recognized it as a top wedding venue consistently since 1999. Working here feels like being part of something genuinely historic — because you are.

Anderson House — Washington, DC

Few DMV wedding venues carry the history and grandeur of Anderson House. Located on Embassy Row in Dupont Circle, this Beaux Arts masterpiece has hosted presidents, princes, and Supreme Court justices over its more than one hundred years of entertaining. Consequently, it carries a weight and significance that’s nearly impossible to replicate elsewhere in the city. Inside, you’ll find marble floors, gilded ceilings, carved wood walls, and a soaring ballroom with a flying marble staircase. The walled garden features a reflecting pool, a three-hundred-year-old Japanese Buddha, and two of the city’s oldest magnolia trees. Additionally, the natural light throughout the mansion’s interior is exceptional for both photography and makeup application — making it one of my personal favorites to work in.
