Why I Source My Makeup Products from Europe

When it comes to choosing the best products for my clients, safety and quality are my top priorities. Many people are drawn to the idea of “clean beauty” in the U.S., but what does that really mean? The truth is, U.S. regulations around cosmetics are far more relaxed than most people realize. This is why I choose to source makeup from Europe—where the standards are higher, and consumer safety is a priority.

The Problem with “Clean Beauty” in the U.S.

In the United States, the term “clean beauty” has become a popular marketing tool. However, it’s important to understand that no official regulations govern this label. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t have strict rules defining what qualifies as “clean.” As a result, companies can use the term freely, often without meeting any specific safety criteria.

Because of this, products labeled as “clean” in the U.S. can still contain harmful ingredients, such as parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. These chemicals can disrupt hormones, cause skin irritation, or even pose long-term health risks. Despite this, they are commonly found in products that are marketed as safe. This is why I prefer to source makeup from Europe, where stricter regulations ensure that harmful ingredients are not allowed.

Why European Standards Are Higher

The European Union (EU) has some of the strictest cosmetic regulations in the world. The EU has banned over 1,300 ingredients from cosmetics, while the U.S. has banned fewer than 20. This stark difference means that European consumers are far more protected when it comes to the safety of their beauty products.

When I source makeup from Europe, I choose products with higher safety standards. European companies must prove their products are safe before selling them. This provides me, and my clients, with the peace of mind that the products I use are truly safe for the skin.

Top Ingredients Banned in Europe but Allowed in the U.S.

To give you an idea of why I prefer to source makeup from Europe, here are some of the most concerning ingredients that are banned in the EU but allowed in U.S. cosmetics:

1. Formaldehyde – A known carcinogen found in nail polish and hair treatments.

2. Hydroquinone – Linked to skin damage and banned in European skincare.

3. Parabens – Preservatives like propylparaben and butylparaben, which may disrupt      hormones.

4. Phthalates – Found in fragrances, linked to reproductive issues.

5. Triclosan – Banned in Europe but still used in U.S. soaps and toothpaste.

6. BHA and BHT – Synthetic antioxidants used in moisturizers, can cause allergic reactions.

7. Oxybenzone – A common sunscreen ingredient linked to hormone disruption.

8. Toluene – Found in nail polish, a respiratory irritant.

9. Coal Tar – Banned in Europe but used in some U.S. scalp treatments.

10. Lead – Still found in some U.S. lipsticks, despite being a known toxin.

These examples show why I trust European products. European cosmetics avoid harmful ingredients and offer a safer, more luxurious experience. When I source makeup from Europe, I know I’m giving my clients the very best.

Why This Matters for You

As a makeup artist, I aim to give my clients beautiful, natural looks using products that enhance their beauty and protect their health. The products I use show my commitment to safety and quality.

Although “clean beauty” is a popular trend in the U.S., it can be misleading. A product labeled as clean isn’t always free from harmful ingredients. That’s why I go beyond labels and prioritize real safety.

Conclusion

You should never settle for less when choosing beauty products. For me, makeup is more than just a beauty tool—it’s a luxury that should never compromise health.

By taking this extra step, I confidently offer my clients a level of care and excellence that’s truly unmatched. When you sit in my chair, you can feel good knowing that I have carefully selected every product I use with your well-being in mind.
