Makeup Myths Debunked: Setting the Record Straight

Have you ever wanted some makeup myths debunked? Well, today is the day! As someone who lives and breathes makeup, I’ve heard it all, and I’m here to set the record straight. Let’s bust these myths wide open and give you the confidence to handle your beauty routine like a professional.

Myth 1: You Need to Spend a Fortune on Makeup for It to Be Good
Debunked:
It’s a common misconception that high price equals high quality. However, many drugstore brands offer excellent products at a fraction of the cost of luxury brands. For example, Maybelline, L’Oréal, and NYX have amazing products that can give you a flawless look without breaking the bank. So, next time you’re shopping, remember that great makeup doesn’t have to be expensive.

Myth 2: Pumping Your Mascara Wand Makes It Last Longer
Debunked:
Pumping your mascara wand actually does more harm than good. This habit pushes air into the tube, which can dry out the product faster and introduce bacteria. Instead, swirl the wand inside the tube to pick up the product without adding air. By doing so, your mascara will last longer and remain free from contaminants.

Myth 3: Concealer Should Be Lighter Than Your Foundation
Debunked:
Using a concealer that’s too light can create a reverse raccoon effect, which isn’t flattering. Instead, for blemishes and general concealing, use a shade that matches your foundation. When it comes to under-eye brightening, go one shade lighter than your foundation for a natural, refreshed look. This way, your makeup will look more cohesive and natural.

Myth 4: Wearing Makeup Every Day Damages Your Skin
Debunked:
Wearing makeup every day won’t damage your skin as long as you follow a proper skincare routine. The key is to thoroughly cleanse your skin at the end of the day, removing ALL makeup, and to use quality skincare products that keep your skin healthy and hydrated. Therefore, you can enjoy your daily makeup routine without worrying about long-term damage.

Myth 5: You Only Need Sunscreen When It’s Sunny
Debunked:
I’ve encountered this myth countless times throughout my years as a makeup artist. UV rays can penetrate clouds and windows, meaning your skin is exposed even on cloudy days or indoors. Hence, make sunscreen a daily part of your skincare routine, regardless of the weather. Your future self will thank you for the extra protection.

Myth 6: Expensive Brushes Are a Must
Debunked:
While quality brushes can make a difference, you don’t need to splurge on high-end brands to achieve a great makeup look. There are many affordable brushes that perform exceptionally well. For instance, brands like Real Techniques and e.l.f. offer fantastic brushes at budget-friendly prices. Consequently, you can build a great brush collection without spending a fortune. Please don’t forget to clean those brushes! I recommend starting with Dawn dish soap, olive oil and washing with warm water. Follow with Cinema Secrets Brush Cleaner.

Myth 7: Makeup Causes Acne
Debunked:
Makeup itself isn’t the culprit for acne; it’s often how we use it. Not properly cleaning brushes, using expired products, or not thoroughly removing makeup can lead to breakouts. Always keep your tools clean, use non-comedogenic products, and maintain a consistent skincare routine to keep your skin clear. Thus, you can enjoy makeup without worrying about acne.

Myth 8: Red Lipstick Only Suits Certain Skin Tones
Debunked:
Red lipstick can actually suit everyone! The key is finding the right shade of red for your undertone. For cool undertones, opt for blue-based reds. For warm undertones, go for orange-based reds. There’s a perfect red for everyone out there!

Myth 9: Matte Lipsticks Are Always Drying
Debunked:
Not all matte lipsticks are created equal. Many modern formulas are designed to be long-lasting and comfortable without drying out your lips. Look for matte lipsticks with hydrating ingredients like jojoba oil or vitamin E. As a result, you can enjoy the trendy matte look without sacrificing comfort.

Myth 10: Setting Spray is Unnecessary
Debunked:
Setting spray can be the final touch that locks your makeup in place, helping it last longer and look fresher throughout the day. It’s especially useful for special occasions or long days when you need your makeup to stay put. Therefore, don’t skip this step if you want your makeup to look flawless all day long.

In conclusion, I hope this blog post helps clear up some common misconceptions about makeup! Remember, makeup is all about having fun and expressing yourself, so don’t let these myths hold you back.
